Variants in the enamel pin community are pins that use the same metal cast, but different enamel colors or screen printing to create an alternate version of the pin.
Pins of almost identical design with small changes to the metal cast may also be considered variants. However for the sake of clarity the pins that do not use an identical metal cast will not be listed as variants in the Indie Pin Database. Pins with small changes to the metal cast will be listed independently as part of the same series.
Below are some example of what is considered a variant for the Indie Pin Database and what should not be listed as a variant in the Indie Pin Database.
Variant Examples
The Hollow Queens pins designed by Xhylin and Whalephat use identical metal casts. The differences are from the colors and types of enamel used.
The Witch's Brew Potion Pins created by Stami Studio's use identical metal casts. The differences are from the enamel colors as well as detailed screen printed images on the enamel surface.
Please note that each database listing only has space for six color variants, meaning that only 7 pin images total can be added to a listing. If a pin has more than 7 versions more listings may be added to include the extra variants in the database.
Not a Variant
These candy frogs created by Blushsprout are very similar, but you can see that the metal lines of the cast are not identical. It is easiest to see in the expressions.
These Fire Fox pins created by Fursona Pins while using a lot of the same line art for the pose and features of the fox have more obvious differences to their metal lines.
These pins are considered part of the same pin series, and to collectors may be termed variants, however they will be listed individually on the Indie Pin Database because they each use a unique metal cast.
